Newport Folk Festival

Back in 1965, a young Bob Dylan strapped on an electric guitar on the stage of the Newport Folk Festival and was basically booed off the stage.

  Like a Rollin’ Stone

Through the years, the Newport Folk Festival has been a venue for many of the greats in the music business.  The festival was started in 1959 by among others Pete Seeger, Newport Jazz Festival founder George Wein, along with Albert Grossman, the infamous manager of Bob Dylan.  Grossman was the dastardly icon that thwarted Paul Pena’s career by holding his masters captive for 25 years.

Among som of the famous performances is Johnny Cash covering Dylan’s Don’t Think Twice (with a little Joan Baez thrown in):

With the advent of 70s Rock & Roll, interest was lost in the Newport Folk Festival and it went out of existence in 1971, only to be revived in 1985.  The festival has become one of the must do’s of the summer season and serves as a wonderful appetizer for The Newport Jazz Festival, held the next weekend.

Too bad we’ll miss this year’s line-up:
