The Other Joisey Newport connection…Doris Dukes

Rough Point was purchased by Dukes in 1922.  And thus began his daughter’s affair with restoration of the once glorious seaport. Doris Duke…and not this one.

but this one

Doris was a jet setter of mammoth proportions.

She was known for all sorts of scandalous behavior including the reasons behind her death and the lingering question of “the Butler”.  Recently, HBO films feature Bernard and Doris documents the end of Duke’s life and her colorful butler’s role in her death.

However sordid Duke’s life was, she was also a terrific philanthropist.  After her death in 1993, her many homes were opened for exhibit and her immense wealth is used to fund restorations.

In Hillsboro, NJ is host to Duke Farms, which has recently become the leading steward of environmental conservation.

Beyond Rough Point, Duke’s initiated the Newport Restoration Foundation which seeks to preserve not only gardens and architecture, but also the works of Townsend and Goddard the revered colonial furniture makers.

Tours for Rough Point are  held daily through the summer at  9:45am, 10:45am, 11:45am, 12:45pm, 1:45pm, 2:45pm & 3:45pm and are $25.00.  The tours are limited to small groups of 12 or smaller, so advanced purchase is a must.  To learn more visit the Newport Restoration Foundation website.

I know Rough Point is on my MUST see list…anyone else?
